Customary IHL remains vital in today’s armed conflicts. The ICRC’s Customary IHL Database contains the 161 rules identified in the 2005 Study along with underlying practice, and is now available in Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Also added: new practice from Djibouti.

Report: IHL and Islamic law in contemporary armed conflicts

This report, based on discussions from an expert workshop held by the ICRC, looks at operational and legal challenges confronting humanitarians in Muslim contexts during armed conflict, including conduct of hostilities; protection for health care; detention; special protection for children; and the proper handling of dead bodies. It aims to provide some ways for strengthening respect for IHL in these environments.
