Forced to Flight launched by the Canadian Red Cross

The Canadian Red Cross has launched a new interactive resource to build youth awareness about issues linked to IHL, including forced migration, child soldiers and sexual violence in situations of armed conflict. Presented on World Refugee Day, Forced to Fight makes use of ICRC contributions, including the Exploring Humanitarian Law toolkit, and is available in English and French.

Elearning: IHL modules now available with the IFRC

The ICRC's new interactive IHL elearning course is now available to all volunteers, staff, members and partners of National Societies and the IFRC via the IFRC's learning platform. This course is specifically designed for humanitarian practitioners and other professionals who wish to learn the basics of international humanitarian law, and do not have any prior legal knowledge.

Publication: Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

The TPNW is the first globally applicable multilateral agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons on the basis of IHL. This new publication contains the text of the TPNW adopted in July 2017 at the UN, and is intended to promote understanding of the TPNW's rules and to facilitate its ratification and implementation by governments.

Publication: Displacement in times of armed conflict - How IHL protects and why it matters

This first study of the ICRC’s IHL Impact research series is an exploratory research that deals with the role and contribution of respect of IHL in relation to displacement. The study highlights that although displacement during armed conflict occurs even when IHL is respected, IHL violations can cause greater displacement and contribute to prolonging the duration of displacement. This publication is now available online and in print. A recording of the launch event is also available.

It is a stark reality that people go missing during armed conflict and situations of violence or disasters, or in the context of migration. In March the International Review of the Red Cross edition on ‘The Missing’ was launched in Colombo, Sri Lanka by the ICRC with an expert panel discussion focused on the provision of psychosocial support to families of missing persons. In a two-part blog post, Review Managing Editor, Ellen Policinski, shares her thoughts from the launch, and introduces the features from this edition.
